Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ is also known as a Japanese laurel.

This evergreen, hardy shrub has large, distinctive green variegated leaves with flecks of gold. A female variety, when pollinated it will bear small purple flowers followed by red berries, which attract wildlife and birds.

Aucuba are easy to grow and care for if they are planted in the right place. For best results, plant in a sunny but partially shady spot in the garden. If growing in a container, reposition the pot to avoid full sun. Aucuba are prone to black leaf, where prolonged, direct sunlight may scorch the leaves. Pruning will only be required after four or five years to keep them in shape. They are very hardy plants and can withstand cold weather well.
