The Allium ‘Ostara’ is a strong plant that blooms as a densely-packed flower head with deep violet-purple flowers, growing from a strong stem with shiny green leaves at the base.
Each individual flower on the globe is packed with nectar, meaning that this plant is a great addition for gardeners who are conscious about bees and other wildlife. These are best suited to planting in the centre of sunny borders and beds where they will happily naturalise for years to come. They can also be used as very attractive cut flowers in a vase to be enjoyed in the home.
This plant is a cross-bred mix of the Allium Karataviense and Allium Atropurpureum, taking the best qualities from each. The deep purple flower heads come from the Karataviense, while the attractive waxy foliage that remain during the flowering period come from the Atropurpureum.
Plant these bulbs 15cm deep and 15cm apart in order for the flowers to have ample space to grow. It is recommended that gardeners should resist cutting back any faded flowers and let these go on to become decorative seedheads.
